REPORTING FROM SAN DIEGO, CALIF– The San Diego Chargers are ushering in the “Ryan Mathews era” this season, as the West High product is embracing the challenge of replacing the great LaDainian Tomlinson in the Lightning Bolts ground game.
Mathews, the 12th overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft out of Fresno State, is expected to make a big impact for the Chargers.
San Diego is considered a contender for the Super Bowl and Mathews will play a big role in the Chargers rushing attack. Mathews says one of the biggest points of training camp is studying the playbook. The former Viking compares his time brushing up on the Chargers plays to that of his classwork at West High School and Fresno State.
KERO-TV’s Pep Fernandez visited Chargers Training Camp and caught up with Mathews as he prepares for his first season in the NFL. Mathews talked about filling the void left by LT and how the fans have embraced him in San Diego. Mathews’ #24 jersey was spotted all around Chargers practice as Mathews stayed late after practice to sign autographs for his followers. Even one fan, Pete Martinez, journeyed from Bakersfield to see his favorite running back: Ryan Mathews.
