Chargers Draft Bakersfield’s Ryan Mathews
REPORTING FROM BAKERSFIELD, Calif — The San Diego Chargers drafted Bakersfield’s Ryan Mathews with the 12th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
After growing up in Tehachapi and playing for West High, Mathews went on to Fresno State where he put together a record setting junior campaign for the Bulldogs, including 1,808 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.
Mathews will now be the man filling the shoes of the departed LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego. L.T. wore #21, just like Mathews at West H.S. and Fresno State, but the former Bulldog says he will not wear “21″ out of respect for the former Charger. Mathews say he might wear #33 since it was the first number he ever had dating back to his playing days in the Tehachapi Youth Football League.
Mathews led the nation in rushing his senior season at West H.S. and was named the MVP of the 2007 Army Arena Bowl.
